CONTROLLER CHELSA WAGNER STATEMENT ON PA. SUPREME COURT RULING RE: UPMC-HIGHMARK

“Today’s Supreme Court decision allows the people–the real stakeholders of UPMC–to have their voices heard. I commend Attorney General Shapiro for his leadership and perseverance.

"This is an important victory against UPMC’s unconscionable actions in denying care to our residents and attempting to silence the very people who fund their operation.

"Earlier today, when I joined patients demanding to be heard at the UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside board meeting, I handed UPMC Board Chair G. Nicholas Beckwith a copy of the petition signed by over 10,000 residents of our region. Outrageously, his response was to question the validity of the petition signatures.

"Yet today’s decision reinforces that UPMC cannot continue to deny the voices of the taxpayers who built and sustain its existence. Our health is not a bargaining chip for UPMC in its quest for market dominance."
