CONTROLLER CHELSA WAGNER STATEMENT REGARDING COURT RULING ON UPMC-HIGHMARK CONSENT DECREE EXPIRATION

“While today’s ruling is not the victory patients whose health lies in the balance hoped for, Attorney General Shapiro and his team articulated a clear case for why our citizens’ interests must take precedence over ‘charity’ health providers’ pursuit of market share and profit. The struggle to make UPMC act like anyone’s conception of a charity must continue regardless of a ruling upholding a contract. I am certain the Attorney General will continue to make his case forcefully on appeal and that the Supreme Court will give every due consideration to the needs of our citizens and what the law requires of a ‘charity.’ However, this decision puts the onus even more squarely on our legislators to finally act to stop predatory behavior by entities who are supposed to be providing life-saving care.”
