(Pittsburgh) Sept. 29, 2016 In her latest Taxpayer Alert, Allegheny County Controller
Chelsa Wagner says that the County’s Elections Division must modernize its method
of tracking Election Day worker assignments, which has resulted in some polling places
being understaffed even while others had a number of workers in excess of what is required.

“While a recent audit by my office showed that our elections are being carried out reliably
through the work of many dedicated citizens, we must always be vigilant in safeguarding this vital
government function. Ensuring that each and every polling location is properly staffed is essential to
the integrity of our elections now and into the future. Allegheny County must address this issue
by correcting uneven polling place staffing, increasing poll worker pay, allowing flexible work hours,
and engaging students and youth,” Wagner writes.

“These reforms and innovations can engage new people in this important process,
and I am pleased to be able to make these suggestions in my Taxpayer Alert.”
